MARRIED: Hannah Crawford, 1827, Lincoln County, Tennessee

Lucinda Jane Divin b. December 11, 1829
James Crawford Divin b. June 9, 1830
Robert Maclin Divin b. December 17, 1832
Mathew A. Divin b. June 30, 1833
Irbin Elbert Divin b. June 28, 1835
I as well as many distant cousins have tried in vain to establish the parentage of Irbin. According to Stan Diven, Irbin's descendants DNA matches none of the known Divin/Diven/Devin branches. Was he a foundling? Was he perhaps of Cherokee parentage? It is said by some that there was a family scandal about the time of his birth. This probably holds the key but until someone comes forward with a clue that perhaps was whispered down through the ages, we seem to be at an impasse. Can anyone help? We have found that in the census reports the name has been spelled as Devin, Deven, Diven, Divin, McDivin, O'Diven, Givens aand even in one instance, Clayton was used as the last name for James Clayton Divin and all names might be spelled with the plural. We are using only the spelling "Divin" as that is how our branch of the family spells our name. Irbin Finley Divin is spelled this way on his tombstone. Our grandfather's name is spelled "Diven" on his tombstone. My sister says that she recalls that our Dad used to spell it "Diven" but then for unknown reason changed it to "Divin."
